Music videos for the YouTube age
Music videos used to be quite similar due to the guidelines set my mainstream tv, as online video company's such as YouTube were not around yet. Music videos tended to be more focused on the Pro-Formance of the band/artists, as there were limits to what could be shown on mainstream television channels such as top of the pops in 1964. Later came MTV in 1981 who although had more creative freedom over what they put out, they still had investors this made sure that nothing outrageous could be shown, still limiting the creativity off the music videos.
In 2005 you tube came along, and this had a dramatic impact on how music videos are done. You tube had little restrictions this gave artists/bands more creative control of their videos it also gave more equal opportunities as with cheap Camra equipment paired with editing soft where smaller bands/artists could make music videos without the support of a tv channel or record label. Furthermore, this also created competition for views as the audiences had control over what they watch this created an a almost arm race of more and more outrageous music videos, leading to what we have today which is completely different to what seen in the days on top of the pop (1964)
Below is an example of what music videos used to be like on shows such as top of the pops, as we can see there is more emphasis on the performance of the music and less on dancers and special effects such as what we see today. Below is a music video for Brown sugar by the rolling sones from 1971 taken from the album Brussels affair.
Below is the first music video from a band called ‘2 door cinema club’, this was there song ‘I can talk’ released as their second single on the debut album on the 20th of November 2009.
As that was their first video, this is their chance to express their image for the audience, their image suggest there are all very talented musicians, due to the emphasis on the playing of instruments especially the guitar, they also are shown as quite young due to their appearance Aswell as the fact there a duvet everywhere suggesting a sleepover type environment.
Below is the bands more recent video of one of their most popular songs, we can see a few differences, with dancers present in the form of what looks to be cheerleaders keeps with the youthful college like theme from their first video maintaining their image, as well as other women on screen representing potential love interests. Furthermore, the emphasis on them playing their instruments is still there, keeping with their image. ‘What You Know’ released in 2011 also on their debut album.
