Dyer star theory
(Richard dyer)
Ritchard dyer is a media theorist, born in 1945. We can see common values among big music stars such as youthfulness, rebellion, sexual magnetism, originality, creativity and of course talent.
Richard says that the star is constructed through the label, and in some cases don’t even have access to their own social media accounts, as there is so much riding on their image that they must filter anything attached to the image of the star. The star is an image and is not real everything you see of them has been carefully planned and organised such as pop stars helping charities, and suddenly there is a camera crew.
Dyer star theory contains, three features to creating a star:
1) The star is a construction- their image is carefully created by the artists management, this shows that the image we are shown of these artists are not the real them, it’s an edited version of them displayed through their work and ethos.
2)The star is a commodity- we are sold the artist through carful marketing from the record label in order to appeal to their target audience, tailoring the artists to the interests and desires of the audience, an example of this is one direction or the spice girls.
3)The star is an ideology- The artists can represent different beliefs, in order to form a fan base that adopts the same or similar ideology in order to create a stronger fan base.
An example is Katy perry, growing up in religious schools with two pastor parents, then compared to her image of outrageous colour and expression, suggest that her image was created and altered when she was becoming a star. Below her some of her products from albums to music videos showing her star image of a colourful young, current and alternative artist who's not afraid to explore the possibilities of her appearance on and off stage.
