Feedback on my first design album artwork

When I presented my first album artwork design to my Media class, I received feedback, below I will outline how my artwork was received and the interpreted connotations associated with it as well as what I can improve on as detailed by my peers.

Was it clear my artwork was for a band or artist?

Since both the front and back cover of my artwork consisted of four people, it was well received that this album is for a Band. Moreover, the consist faces on the front and back as well as the fact the whole cover is designed around them suggested this was a band/group. Also, the name of Fred’s angels is in the plural suggesting multiple members.

Was the genre clear?

This cover got many different variations of genre suggested from pop to rock. The use of red in the title suggested to my classmates that this could potentially be rock due to the connotations attached to the colour in relation to the rock genre. Furthermore, the hip-hop/rap vibe is shown though the look of the girls posing for the camera such as in east-coast gang/rap culture as well as the fact they are holding guns. The use of the parental advisory as well also gives of the suggestion of hip-hop as its telling us there will be inappropriate language. It was also mentioned that the name ‘petal pistols’ gives of connotations related to the genre of hip-hop and in some cases rock, like the band guns and roses. Moreover, the use of a faded imagery gives of the idea that this album was not made today, this combination with the other factors gives of a 90’s hip-hop suggestions like those of, Missy Elliot. The intended genre of this band's music was hip-hop with a bit of pop in places.

What worked well?

The juxtaposition between the all-white clothing and the and the guns, is interesting to audiences, as it creates confusion over the beliefs as well as style of the band. Furthermore, the tropical/Hawaiian look created through the background consisting of bamboo on the front and the sun piercing the top of the back image gives of exotic connotations.

In addition, the use of curved lettering for ‘Fred's angels’ was said to be effective as it imitates sort of gates such as heavens gates. The fact that both the images matched as they look like the belong together worked well, with the colour schemes being consistent.

Also the pose/position of the girls was said to have worked well as they don’t look very menacing even though they are holding deadly weapons, as they look as though they are about to break a smile or potentially break into song.

What could I have improved on?

I did not include any legal information or studio information, this was just down to personal fault, but to improve I would add these in t make the overall Finnish of the album look better.

I could have also improved the font on the track list on the back cover as it seems very plain and boring when compared to other aspects of the design. Moreover, I seem to have missed a trick with the placement of the tracks, as I already have them on the stairs, I could have put more effort in using the stairs and integrating them in more with the track list. Also, the colour of the font and back do not match and although the colour red did course confusion among when determining genre, they should match even if I were to use a colour other than red.

Also, the position of the band name ‘petal pistols’ needs to be moved up as it is very low down in the corner of the cover, it was suggested to make the image more centred in regard to the band name in case there is a problem with a printer and the name of the band, that is a key convention was cut off.
