test shoot reflection

In our test shoot one thing that I feel went very well was the way in which we described out concept, mainly with the single frame shots. In the edited test shoot, all the single frame was shot on my iPhone, and the way it turned out in the song I feel worked very well. The only thing I have taken away from it is that we will need a lot more images to fill up the space, either that or I will need to extent the duration of those images as there is a lack of them and a clear need for more images as more time needs to be filled in these sections.

What also went well was that the band had a good understanding of the song and although they had not practiced the song, they were all able to play by ear very well, this shows they are good musicians and are good at their prospective instruments. They were all also preforming and trying to give it some energy for the camera, this is reassuring as we as a group feel confident in their performance and on the day in a much more serious environment, we are certain they will look goods in the shots.

The concept of confined space was very challenging to execute as we had very limited resources and could not use a full set. I came up with the idea of using black card to create a low ceiling and play with that idea of confined space, this did not work as well for our other band members that play instruments as it was hard for us to create a barrier in such short notice. We then attempted to use light as was suggested in our set design, this worked to an extent but I feel that it meant that as our concept is quite unique and complex that the test shoot did not do the idea justice and that it worked in the sense that it showed the basics of our idea but I feel it failed to show the full extent of it in the way that other more simple videos could have done.

The section with Douglas our lead singer in the middle 8 section with the revolving camera works I feel worked very well, although it was in the wrong setting I throughout it was a very nice shot and very fitting to the song. Also, the way that Doug moved was exactly how I imagined it looking.

We did have some issues with the cast, one being that we found it very challenging to get them all in one place for the test shoot, we had to use 3 different days and still could not get them all in one place. This is mostly due to logistics and a lack of communication as some people forget we had the test shoot or had their own occurrences. We did the best we can with that situation, and I feel the test shoot still shows the concept and thus does what we set out to do.

I think that from this test shoot as a group we need to be responsible for this project as some members when told a certain thing will start at a time will turn up at that time. This does not account for all the set up that needs to be done, this adds time to the proceedings and is very inefficient, ownership needs to be taken. Moreover, we need to make sure the band are fully confident with the song and lyrics ETC. In addition, we need to make sure that our concept is %100 clear before the real shoot day as this could cause confusion, especially as we were not able to fully display the concept in our test shoot although some elements went very well.

Targets include:

  • Band learning song

  • Further group interaction and planning (lacking a lot now)

  • We need more ideas that are going to be spontaneous in situations such as the test shoot as problems require solutions

  • More ownership from the group over this project

  • Think about how we film these confined space shots
