Social Media: conclusion of research

To conclude my research, I have found that both The Killers and Tame Impala use social media as a marketing tool but to different extents. The killers use their twitter to market some of their marketing is not subtle its almost being thrown at you at times, this is more so in the run up to the album release. Tame Impala on the other hand still used their Instagram to market but nowhere near to the same extent. This is because I feel a difference in the star image as well as control of the institutions. Kevin who Is the one-man band for Tame Impala has a very lowkey Instagram that only directly marketed him album about 1-3 times over the period of release.

Tame Impala has a very laid-back star-image that does not flaunt the same things that say pop artists would. Kevin is all about the music and has it seem as though he isn't that bothered how many albums he sells if he is doing what he loves, making music. This could also be because he may be a more independent artist so here by the record label has less control or none, over his social media. In the way that Tame Impala did market the album and live shows I thought they were very successful as the marketing was not obvious and did not feel as though they were constantly trying to sell you things. This I feel has an impact as the few posts have more of an impact as the consumer makes that jump from subtle promotion to purchasing the product on their own without links and products being clearly shown. As both these bands are in the genre of indie/rock they have more of a sense of individuality to them as they don't follow the norm. This suggests why the marketing campaigns on social media are different as these bands have a bit freer will to act in their own way that is ultimately apart of the star-image.

The killers marketing on their social media was a bit less personal as they only had a few non promotion posts such as birthday posts for members of the band. This is where the two differ as the killers where obviously trying to sell their texts and products. Although it’s explicitly selling to consumers and not giving that personal incite that audiences want in order to feel a part of the band and their life. I thought they were still successful in the way that old music was promoted in the lead up, almost reminding audiences of their sound pre-release, they also used different future artists to build up a bigger range of demand from different target audiences pre-releasee. In addition, I also liked the way they used chat shows to take their fans to another platform to then hear them speak and talk/sell the album.

I feel that both acts, although they took slightly different approaches where successful in their marketing in their own ways. This could be down to the relevance of the chosen platforms for the genre and target audience resulting in more or less marketing. But ultimately, I feel that the two acts have different connotations attached to the as-well as their star-image, this explains the difference as the bands need to adhere to that image that they have been selling in order to keep about them what audiences want.
